SolutionsSmall Business ServerMicrosoft Small Business Server is a special server offering from Microsoft tailored to small businesses with anywhere from 2 to 75 employees. It is a cost effective way for small businesses to take advantage of technology that larger businesses use every day, such as Exchange Server that offers shared calendars, email, tasks, shared contacts and much more. It also offers custom features that larger businesses are not offered such as Remote Web Workplace (RWW) which allows employees the ability to work from home very easily. To see a demo of any of the Small Business Server features please fill out the short form at the bottom of the page and we will call you to discuss your needs. If you are interested in reading more about Microsoft Small Business Server, check out this article from Microsoft: Is Your Business Ready for a Server (pdf). We also have a self assessment form that you can fill out to get more detailed information regarding your network. Terminal ServerWhat is a terminal server?A Terminal Server is a server that allows employees to receive a desktop screen located at the main office from any location with internet access. It is as if the employee is sitting in the office but they could be sitting on a beach in Florida taking in the sun and warm weather. For example, you have some applications such as ACT and QuickBooks that you need some employees to have access to but they do not work at the office. ACT and QuickBooks get installed on the Terminal Server. When employees log in from home they receive a desktop screen that is running on the Terminal Server. That desktop screen is located at the office with full access to the file server that houses the ACT and QuickBooks data. All transactions are still taking place in the office so the applications run very fast. A Terminal Server used along with a Microsoft Small Business Server is a good replacement for VPN. VPN’s are typically slow because applications like ACT and QuickBooks actually transmit the data through the internet via the VPN. Instead, the Terminal Server keeps the data on the local network at the office. Opening documents on the Terminal Server will take seconds instead of minutes like with a VPN. Another benefit to a Terminal Server is that the software that employees use is only installed on one computer, the Terminal Server. This makes maintenance and upgrades much easier and more cost effective. We only need to patch and upgrade the software application on the Terminal Server, not each individual computer.
